Comparing the Baton Rouge Suburbs
There's no single best suburb, and anyone who gives you one answer is guessing about your life. Start with three questions: where will you drive every day, what kind of house do you want, and which school district matters to you?
Start with your commute
| If you work… | Look first at |
|---|---|
| Downtown Baton Rouge or the Capitol | Baton Rouge, Zachary, St. George |
| LSU or the medical corridor | Baton Rouge, St. George, Prairieville |
| The plants in Geismar or along the river | Geismar, Dutchtown, Prairieville, St. Amant |
| East side of Baton Rouge or in Livingston Parish | Denham Springs, Walker |
| Remote, with occasional trips | Anywhere — now optimize for house, land and school zone |
Then match the housing you want
- Newer subdivision construction: Prairieville, Dutchtown, Gonzales, Walker, Zachary
- Land and acreage: St. Amant, rural Livingston Parish, outer Ascension Parish
- Established neighborhoods with mature trees: Baton Rouge, St. George, central Gonzales, Denham Springs
- Character and historic homes: Baton Rouge (Mid City, Garden District), Plaquemine
- Most house per dollar: typically Livingston Parish and Plaquemine
Then check the school district
Districts here don't follow the mailing address, and that trips people up. Ascension, Livingston, East Baton Rouge, Zachary and Central all run separate systems, and attendance zones change. Verify any specific address with the district before you make a decision based on schools.
What I'd actually do
Pick two or three areas from the table above, drive them on a weekday at your commute hour, then drive them again on a weekend. Tour a few homes in each. Most people know within two days — and it's a much better decision than one made from a listing site three states away. Read the full community guides →
