LaPlace is the largest community in St. John the Baptist Parish and the closest of my service areas to New Orleans. It sits where I-10 and I-55 meet, which makes it a genuine commuter base for both the New Orleans metro and the river corridor.

Types of homes in LaPlace
Subdivision housing from the 1970s onward makes up most of the market, with newer construction mixed in and some rural property toward the lake and the river. Hurricane Ida in 2021 affected this area significantly, so roof age, repair history and elevation documentation matter on every home.
Getting around
I-10 puts the New Orleans metro roughly 30 minutes east in normal traffic, and I-55 runs north toward Hammond. Baton Rouge is about an hour west. The Bonnet Carré Spillway sits just east of the community.
Local life
LaPlace is known for Andouille sausage and the food culture around it, with lake and river recreation nearby and New Orleans close enough for regular trips.

LaPlace buyer questions
Is LaPlace a good base for working in New Orleans?
It's one of the more practical options — roughly 30 minutes on I-10 outside peak traffic, with housing that costs less than comparable homes closer to the city.
What should I know about flood risk and insurance here?
This area took significant damage in 2021, and both flood and wind coverage are central to the monthly cost. Pull the FEMA map, ask about flood history, review any elevation certificate, and get a real quote early.
How far is LaPlace from Baton Rouge?
Roughly an hour west on I-10, traffic permitting.
